Adolfo Cambiaso, the world’s best player, was forced off the field with an injury as Dubai retained the Cartier Gold Cup in Sotogrande at the weekend.

The Argentinian picked up a suspected rib injury and left the field with three minutes to play as Dubai defeated Ayala Polo Team 12-7 at Santa Maria Polo Club.

The finale was tied until the final chukka before Dubai, who started with patron Rashid Albwardy, Santiago Stirling, Alejo Taranco and Cambiaso, gained the upper hand as the quartet atoned for their Silver Cup defeat.

Cambiaso, replaced by La Dolfina team-mate Juan Nero, was the top scorer, with nine goals. Dubai worked well as a whole, blocking most of the plays Facundo and Nicolás Pieres, the dangerous Argentinian brothers, attempted against them for Ayala.

Taranco said afterwards: “It was a very tough tournament. The Silver Cup was a shame; we were eliminated from the tournament after losing in penalties, but overall the season has been amazing.

“Dubai and Cambiaso play to win everything, so there is always pressure when you play with this organisation, but we were able to come through when it really mattered.”

The world’s top players now head across the Atlantic for the Argentinian season as La Dolfina attempted to retain their Triple Crown.

The extent of Cambiaso’s injury has yet to be fully revealed.
